Compromise of 1850
The Compromise of 1850 was the compromise that determined whether the new territories, acquired from the Mexican-American War, would be a slave or free territory. -
Fugitive Slave Act
It strengthened the pre-existing Fugitive Slave Act of 1793 by enforcing greater penalties for runaways. -
Kansas Nebraska Act
The Kansas Nebraska Act repealed the Missouri Compromise and allowed for popular sovereignty. This cause white, pro-slavery people to flood the territory and make the territory a slave state. -
Dred Scott Decision
Dred Scott was a slave who was forced to move from a slave state to a free state, under his master. He then sued for his freedom, where he was then denied. -
John Brown's Raid on Harper's Ferry
John Brown led a group of 21 men on a raid on a federal armory in Harper's Ferry. He took over the federal arsenal and took people hostage. Brown was then captured and hanged six weeks later. -
Election of 1860
The Election of 1860 caused a large controversy over the United States. The nominees were Abraham Lincoln, John Breckenridge, John Bell, and Stephen Douglas. In the South, Abraham Lincoln didn't have a single vote. This was because he was not on the ballot. Southerners were extremely upset about this. -

This was the last major military campaign of the civil war. Ulysses S Grant drove the confederate army across the Mississippi into the defense lines surrounding fort Vicksburg. -
