  • Compromise of 1850

    The Compromise of 1850 was the compromise that determined whether the new territories, acquired from the Mexican-American War, would be a slave or free territory.
  • Fugitive Slave Act

    It strengthened the pre-existing Fugitive Slave Act of 1793 by enforcing greater penalties for runaways.
  • Kansas Nebraska Act

    The Kansas Nebraska Act repealed the Missouri Compromise and allowed for popular sovereignty. This cause white, pro-slavery people to flood the territory and make the territory a slave state.
  • Dred Scott Decision

    Dred Scott was a slave who was forced to move from a slave state to a free state, under his master. He then sued for his freedom, where he was then denied.
  • John Brown's Raid on Harper's Ferry

    John Brown led a group of 21 men on a raid on a federal armory in Harper's Ferry. He took over the federal arsenal and took people hostage. Brown was then captured and hanged six weeks later.
  • Election of 1860

    The Election of 1860 caused a large controversy over the United States. The nominees were Abraham Lincoln, John Breckenridge, John Bell, and Stephen Douglas. In the South, Abraham Lincoln didn't have a single vote. This was because he was not on the ballot. Southerners were extremely upset about this.

    Dorthea Dix Leads March in Washington

    Dix led a march on Washington in April 1861, for women to be allowed to serve as nurses in the war effort.
  • Shots at Fort Sumter

    Confederate troops demanded that Union troops evacuate or else Confederate forces would take over the force.
  • Battle of Bull Run

    Union soldiers crossed a small creek called Bull Run to attack Confederates, but the Confederates charged and let out a high pitched battle call known as the "Rebel Yell".

    Two Union generals sailed troops on a fleet of riverboats and captured two key forts.

    Lincoln had wanted to submit a draft of an Emancipation Proclamation because he wanted to time to be right for such a dramatic move.
  • The Battle of Gettysburg

    It was fought in and around Gettysburg, Pensalvaina where George Meades Army of the Potomac defeated Robert E. Lee's Army.
  • The Battle of Vicksburg

    This was the last major military campaign of the civil war. Ulysses S Grant drove the confederate army across the Mississippi into the defense lines surrounding fort Vicksburg.
  • Gettysburg Address

    The Gettysburg address was given by president lincoln in the dedication of the soldier's national cemetery in Gettysburg Cemetary.
  • The Battle of Mobile Bay

    People fought in and around the mobile bay.

    1865, helped former slaves and poor white people.
  • 13th Amendmant

    The 13th Amendment was ratified. In the constitution, "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction."
  • Lincoln's Assination

    Lincoln died... got shot by John Wilkes Boooth at Ford's Theater.
  • Civil Rights Act to 1866

    The act declared all people born in the states of all colors and races to be free.

    Congress wanted to take reconstruction out of the President's hands, so they passed the Reconstruction Acts of 1867.

    The amendment granted equal citizenship to all people born in the states and equal protection under the law.

    Made violence and threats towards people's freedom to vote, serve on a jury, or hold office illegal

    This amendment stated that the government could not restrict the right to vote because of race, color, or previous condition of servitde.

    Hayes wins after losing the popular vote to Tilden.
