Missouri Compromise
Missouri was admitted as a slave state and Maine was admitted as a free state. It split Louisiana Purchase into two. The North was free and the South was slave state territory. -
Compromise of 1850
Admitted California as a free state and allowed the Southwestern territories to be set up without restriction on slavery. It creates a stonger fugitive slave law, outlawed slave trade in Washington DC, and allowed Utah and New Mexico to decide whether to allow slavery. -
Radical Republicans
Strongly opposed slavery and weren't too happy about trying to get slave states to join the Union once more. They wanted to abolish slavery for good and respected the rights of freed slaves. They wanted the South to go through a stronger reconstruction. -
Bleeding Kansas
The Kansas- Nebraska Act states that the problem of slavery in those states would be decided by popular sovereignty. Both pro-slaver and anti-slavery forces rushed to the states to vote. -
Lincoln is Elected
Abraham Lincoln is elected President. He was against slavery and became the first Republican to run the country. -
South Carolina Secedes
South Carolina was the first Confederate State and wanted slavery to be allowed in thier region. They strongly disagreed with the North's point of view and decided being their own country would be better. -
