Comprimise of 1850
because of the gold rush of 1849 the area far out west this new state of California petitioned to be a free state. If this went through the balance of free and slave states would be threatened. They decided that they would give Texas 10 million dollars to compinsate and that the new state's inhabintants would vote on wether they were going to be free or slave state. -
