    If Missouri entered as a slave state without any other state running as a free state then the power of the slave states would be greater. Northerns wanted to ban slavery but Southerners wanted it. later they're disagreements turned into sectionalism-an exaggerated loyalty to a particular region of the country. Missouri ended up being a slave state with Maine as a free state in return which balanced the power of the states.
  • Compromise of 1850

    Compromise of 1850
    The United States took New Mexico and California from Mexico.And since these states couldn't be slave states the free states would be more powerful in Congress making the Southerners want to secede-withdraw from a membership of a federal union.Representative David Wilmot wanted to ban slavery from any lands taken from Mexico. Many antislavery forces wanted to ban slavery in Washington D.C., but in return the South wanted a stronger fugitive-person has escaped or in hiding to avoid arrest.

    Senator Stephen Douglas suggested Congress didn't follow the Missouri Compromise and made the idea to use popular sovereignty-let settlers in those areas vote on whether to allow slavery.After that law passed people rushed to Kansas these people were border ruffians-cross the border to vote illegally.

    Proslavery supporters attacked the town Lawrence of antislavery supporters. Three days later an antislavery group led by John Brown attacked in the Pottawatomie Massacre. Which broke out of a fight in Congress.

    Scotts owner was in a few free states when Dred was there. Many believed that Scott was a runaway slave and ended up going to court. Dred was found as a slave because even though he was in the free states under the U.S. constitution he was not a person.
  • Lincoln Douglas Debates

    Lincoln Douglas Debates
    Stephen Douglas and Abraham Lincoln both wen through several debates during the Illinois state election.They both discussed slavery and state right but they also went deeper.Lincoln stated, "A house divided against itself can not stand."Douglas said that the territories should be able to choose if they have slaves or not. On election day Stephen Douglas won.

    Antislavery supporter John Brown lead a small group to suddenly attack an federal armory in Harpers Ferry, Virginia. To try and start an revolt of armed slaves. To also destroy the institution of slavery.

    Election of Lincoln
    Lincoln was the candidate for the antislavery republican party. When Lincoln won the slave states started talking about secession-withdrawing from a membership of a federation. With in months the slave states started seceding.
  • Lincoln Inaugural Address

    Lincoln became the sixteenth president of the United States. Lincoln made an Olive Branch to the south and enforce federal laws for the states that has seceded.

    South Carolina had the idea of seceding from the United States. Confederates surrounded the fort and began to shoot.With the the fort running out of supplies Major Anderson was forced to surrender. This is know as the beginning of the Civil War.
