Missouri Compromise
The North had 11 free states and the south had 10 slave states. They feared adding Missouri would cause unbalance and conflict. The compromise was reached. Missouri would enter as a slave state if the rest of the Louisiana Purchase would enter as free states. -
Wilmot Proviso
This was a bill that said any land the US got from Mexico would not have slaves. The north liked this and the south hated it. This bill passed the House of Representatives but never passed the US Senate -

Popular Soverenignty was the idea that people could vote for whether or not they wanted slavery. This created tension between the north and the south. -

The great debate was between Clay and Calhoun. Calhoun disagreed with Clay on the topic of slavery and wanted to seced from the Union. -
The Compromise of 1850
Clay's compromise was that the southwould get a stronger Fugitive Slave Act and the west would get Popular Soverenignity. This compromise was a fail and Calhoun wasn't happy. -
"Uncle Tom's Cabin" by Harriet Beecher Stowe
This novel was a novel that shared the exsperience of a slave in the south. The south said the novel was an incorrect representation of slavery and the north was deeply angered. This novel was the second best selling novel after the Bible. -
The Birth of the Republican Party
"Free soil, free speech, free labor, free men."
The Republican Party was a group of anti-slavery whigs whose mission was to end slavery. In the beginning they called themselves the "Free Soil Party". -
Kansas-Nebraska Act
This act replaced the Missouri Compromise. It gave the new states the ability to decide whether to be a free state or not based on popular soverenigty. The North wanted to ignor the act and it split the Whig party in half. -
Dred Scott's Decision
Scott was a free black man from the north who moved to the south. He was captured and forced into slavery. Scott tried sueing saying he came from a free state, he was a free man. His plan didn' work out and this angered the north. Any hope for compromising any farther was diminished. -
