    Rather risk the breakup of the Union, Congress wanted to make the states have equal amounts of slave-states and free-states. Imaginary line at 36°30' north, all free states had to be above this and all slave states had to be below this.
  • Compromise of 1850

    Compromise of 1850
    California came to the Union as a free state. New Mexcio and Utah would be looking to become an open slave state to help the south. In addition to this, no more slaves could be sold or bought in the nations capitol, Washington DC. With this occuring, the Missouri Compromise was now no longer in act.

    Adds Kansas and Nebraska to the Union. It was up to the people whether they would be free-states or slave-states. It went againt the Missouri compromise. Huge war with North and south for the both new states to be a frre state or a slave state.

    Dred Scott Case
    In 1857, the bloodshed over slavery went from Congress to the Supreme Court. The case was about a former Missouri slave named Dred Scott. His owner took him to Wisconson where slavery was bannded by the Missouri Compromise. Therefore he went to court to win back his freedom. Two key questions were thought about. As a former slave, was Scott allowed to bring this case to a federal court? Also, did his time in Wiscinson make him a free man? The verdict in the end was not on Scott wished to hear.

    Scott was accused as a non-citizen so he could no bring a case to court. Also his time in court was not able to make him a citizen. Many people thought this was unfair especially people in the south.
  • Election of 1860

    Election of 1860
    The Election of 1860 was between Lincoln and John Brown showed how divided the Union was. The Republicans sidded with Lincoln and the Republicans were split between the north and the south. Both sides wanted different people. In the end, Lincoln won with only 40% of the votes. He wasnt even on the selection in the south. SOutheners got very agrivated by this and saw they were "not important in the election."
  • Attack on Fort Sumter.

    Attack on Fort Sumter.
    South carolina hot heads opened fired on Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861. After 33 hours of deffending, they took down the flag and put up a white flag meaning they surrendered. Many poeple got mad at this, this was one of the first attacks of the Civil war and was only the beggining. A New york newspaper said the base is temperarily closed but the union is saved.
