Lincoln won the presidential election in 1860 which was considered the last straw for the south. This is because, Lincoln was outspokenly against slavery. -

South Carolina secedes from the union in protest of the slavery debate. This leads to 6 more states seceding in less than two months. This was the wake up call for both north and south there would have to be a war. -

The fourteenth amendment freed slaves and protected them by law. This impacted the north by allowing freed slaves to fight in the union army for their forever freedom. It impacted the south agriculturally because all the manual labor slaves did had to be done by employed white men. -
