  • Election of 1860

    The main issue of the election of 1860 was the topics of slavery and states' rights. This election is important because ultimately the election was won by Abraham Lincoln which upset the southerners because of his views on these topics.
  • South Carolina succeeds from the Union

    South Carolina seceding from the union is significant because it became the first state to secede from the federal union. It also provoked the outbreak of the Civil War that would happen shortly after this event.
  • Shots fired at Ft. Sumter

    In Charleston, South Carolina the first shot was fired in the American Civil War. This is significant because it sparked the deadliest war in American history.
  • Battle of Bull Run

    The Battle of Bull Run took place in Northern Virginia. And this battle is significant because it was the first major clash in the Civil War. Many thought that the Union would crush the Confederates but the Confederates came out on top after a long and bloody war. In the end, the Confederates proved to be a much stronger force.
  • Monitor vs Merrimack

    Otherwise known as "Battle of Hampton Roads", Monitor v Merrimack was a naval clash that took place in Hampton Roads, Virginia. This battle is significant because it is notable for being history’s first duel between ironclad warships. It also ushered in a beginning of a new era of naval warfare.
  • Battle of Shiloh

    Also known as "The Battle of Pittsburg Landing", The Battle of Shiloh was fought on land and it occurred near Pittsburg Landing, Tennessee. This is one of the many battles that took place during the Civil War. The North ultimately came out on top after holding off the Confederates.
  • Battle of Antietam

    The Battle of Antietam, also called The Battle of Sharpsburg, was a major part in advancing the Confederates army deeper into the Northern territory. This battle was also significant because it was the bloodiest day in all of American history, not just the American Civil War.
  • Lincoln issues Emancipation Proclamation

    The Emancipation Proclamation is significant because it encourgaed everyone to unite and most importantly it said that all slaves shall be freed. This announcement changed not only the Civil war trajectory but it changed the history of America forever.
  • Battles of Gettysburg and Vicksburg

    The Battles of Gettysburg and Vicksburg happened at the same time and as seen as a turning point for the Union due to their victories in bith battles. The Gettysburg was one of the bloodiest battles in th ewar and took place over multiple days from July 1st to July 3rd in 1863. The Confederacy's loss, damaged their chances an hurt their morale.
  • Lincoln delivers the Gettysburg Address

    The Gettysburg Address was given in honor of the fallen soldiers in the Civil War. This is significant because it commemorated the brave soldiers and put forth union and freedom.
  • Ft. Pillow Massacre

    Taking place on The Mississippi River in Henning, Tennessee during the Civil War. The Ft. Pillow Massacre was one of the most controversial events of the American Civil War because the Union surrendered, and although the Union garrison should have been taken as prisoners of war. the soldiers were instead killed.
  • Sherman's March to the Sea

    Sherman's March to the Sea was constructed by William T. Sherman. And it was a march across Georgia. The purpose of this march was to scare the citizens of Georgia and destroy everything in his path like houses, livestock and whole towns.
  • General Lee surrenders at Appomattox Courthouse

    Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered to union General Ulysses S. Grant at the Appomattox Courthouse on April 9th, 1865. This is very important because it marked the end of the brutal Civil War and meant that the south had lost the war.
