The Missouri Compromise
A compromise that set a division line in the U.S, leaving free states in the North, and slave states in the South. It caused conflict because, due to this compromise, it became complicated to introduce new states without unbalancing the senate. -

Tariff of Abominations
A high tariff set on imported goods to protect the american (mostly northern) industrty. It caused conflict because the tariff benefitted the North, that produced the goods, and was unfair to the South, that had to buy these goods. -
Nat Turner's Rebellion
Nat Turner, a literate slave, led a group of followers to Southampton, and had a battle which resulted in the death of 55 white men. This maddened the South when they heard their slaves had fought white men. -
Texas Annexation
The event in which Texas became a part of the U,.S. It caused conflict since Texas was a free country, and as it joined the U.S., it unbalanced the senate. -
Mexican American War
A war Mexico and the US. had over territory. The U.S. had offered to buy the land, but Mexico didn't want to sell it. The only solution was war. This caused conflict because, once again, the new state (Mexico) unbalanced the senate, and there wasn't a decision on whether it should a free or slave state. -
Dred Scot vs. Sanford
A supreme court case in which Dred argues that he is free because he had lived in a free state for some time. This caused controversy because the supreme court said he was property, and the constitutiion ptotects property, and therefore, protects slavery, which northerners didn't like. -
Compromise of 1850
A set of laws that was meant to solve the conflict between the North and the South.
1. Texas surrendered its claim to New Mexico.
2. California was a free state.
3. New Mexico territory and Utah territory could become slave states in the future.
4. Anyone who helped a fugitive would be fired or imprisoned.
5. Slave trade was banned in Washington DC, not slavery.
This caused conflict because these laws created barriers and differences between the two sections of the U.S. -
Uncle Tom's Cabin
A book Written by Harriet Breecher of a slave that stood up for his beliefs. This caused controversy because the book supported abolitioniswm, and made the South think differently and oppose to the North. -
Kansas-Nebraska Act
An act proposed by senator Stephen A. Douglas, when the Kansas-Nebraska territory wouldn't decide on wether to be a free or slave state. He proposed the idea to vote, on freedom or slavery. This caused conflict because whichever side lost after the voting, would be mad. -
Lincoln - Douglas Debates
Fighting for presidency, Lincoln and Douglas had multiple debates, - seven, to be exact - and the main topic of all of them was slavery. Lincoln lost, but he made an impact in the people's thoughts, making them believe that slavery was horible. The South was terrified. -
Bleeding Kansas
The slave supporters went to Kansas to vote and ended up winning the elections over slavery in the state. This caused conflict because anti-slavery supporters did not admit this idea. Slave supporters attacked these anti-slaverists, but these group fought back, killing 5 slavery supporters. -
John Brown's Raid on Harper's Ferry
John Brown, an abolitionist, led some slave troops to Harper's Ferry, Virgina. He is defeated by white troops in the end, but is seen as a martyr by the Northeners, which causes a revolt in this section of the country. -
Lincoln's Election
Even though his name din't appear in the Southern ballots, thanks to the Northern votes Lincoln won the election. Now there was a higher probabilty of abolitionism with Lincoln as president, so the South started thinking of secession and leaving the union. -
Birth of Republican Party
Slavery split the Democratic party, and the Republican party rised. They were abolitionists, and won the election with Lincoln. Southerners were worried because they feared a future revolt and battle between the abolitionist groups and themselves.
