Dred Scott was a slave fighting for himself and his family in court to be free. He was taken by his owner into a free state which should make him free, but he was told to go there by the army. Said blacks can't be free, can't prevent slavery, and congress can't take away proprety. -

Kansas/Nebraska Act
Repealed the Missouri Compromise. People would vote (popular soveriety) on being free or slave states, causing Bleeding Kansas. -
Bleeding Kansas
Armed pro-slavery and anti-slavery people went to Kansas to vote and they started shooting and killing the opposing side. Some say it was the first bloodshed of the Civil War. -
Lincoln Douglas Debates
Douglas was against slavery but believed it should be up to each state whether they are a free or slave state. Abe Lincoln believed congress should decide about slavery but was against it. -
John Brown's Raid
John Brown didn't believe in slavery and started an uprising and slaves didn't help. He failed and was hanged. -
Lincoln Elected
Lincoln won the majority of votes to win the election. Also, he won all of northern votes and was against slavery. -
