There were many routes to get to the free land in the Northern. It was very risky to escape from your slave owners but it was a chance slaves would take.
  • Mexican American War

    Mexican American War
    Was a war between Mexico and the United States. The United States thought that they already had all of the land and wanted to expand the land farther. After the United states won the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was put in place and the conflict between Texas and Mexico was over.
  • Wilmot Proviso

    Wilmot Proviso
    <a href='' >http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilmot_Proviso</a>It was a part of the Guadalipe Hildago treaty which gave us California from Mexico. It could of abolished slavery but the Wilmot Proviso never went through.
  • Compromise of 1850

    <a href='' >http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compromise_of_1850</a>The Northern and Southern states were arguing about Slavery. Five bills were passed regarding the four year feud over land obtanied from the Mexican American War. The bill avoid succeession between the northern and southern states.

    This act was a controversial act between north and south. It states that all run away slaves had to be returned to their masters. later, this was repealed by congress.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

The main reason that this land was openend was because the people wanted more land and the Trans-contentail Railroad.

It basically is saying that Kansas always had an opened wound that would not stop bleeding which eventually needed stiches. Kansas had two different goverments due to the disputes over slavery.

If Spain did not sell that land to the United States than the U.S. would declare war against Spain. United States never bought the land.
