The Emancipation Proclamation was a document issued by Lincoln as a result of the prior events in the Civil War, such as Bloody Antietam, and the Siege of Fort Sumter. It took effect on January 1st, 1863. Lincoln stated tha unless if the Confederate States returned to the Union prior to then, their slaves would be "thenceforward and forever free." -

As the end of the war neared, the Confederacy's effort to survive was relentless. Their army's size was decreasing tenfold and food rations were scarce. The Union troops led by Ulysses S. Grant grew to over 120,000. The war was now over. -

Grant and Lee signed the surrender for the Army of Northern Virginia on April 9, 1865, in Appomattox Court House, Virginia. Grant offered a peaceful surrender. He would grant them immunity from prosecution for treason. The surrender is often called the Gentleman's Agreement. because of the character shown by both generals. -
Assassination of President Lincoln

President Lincoln decided to celebrate Lee's capitulation of the Civil War by attending a British play, Our American Cousin. Grant was expected to attend the play as well, but he visited his son in New Jersey. John Wilkes Booth held a Derringer pistol six inches away from President Lincoln's head, and fired. He then stabbed Henry Rathbone in his arm and jumped over the President's Box.
