  • Emancipation Proclamation

    Emancipation Proclamation
    only freed the slaves in states that were rebelling against the North. Didn’t free slaves immediately.
    Caused blacks in the North to join the army and help free slaves. First black regiment to go into combat
    Confederates didn’t list any slaves until a little before the war ended.
    In response, the Confederate president issued a death order against black soldiers.
  • Gettysburg Address

    Gettysburg Address
    Lincoln issues address and dedicates a cemetery to the soldiers. Lincoln wanted equality for all men. More than slavery, more than restoring the union, but restoring liberty, equality, and freedom for everyone.
  • Reconstruction

    Reconstruction
    Many plans to restore the country after the war. 10% plan and Radical Republican’s plan
    10% - if 10% of the southern states agreed to coming back, they would be restored in the union.
    Radical - wanted to punish south and not let them in as easily, required 50% of state to agree
  • Black Codes

    Black Codes
    caused from the 13th amendment. This required slaves to sign contracts and have very little pay. If you didn’t want to be a slave anymore, you would have to go to jail.
  • Lincoln’s Assassination

    Lincoln’s Assassination
    Ford Theater in Washington, DC, to watch a play with his wife. John Wilkes Booth pretends to be in the play, gets past the guards, walks into Lincoln’s booth and shoots him in the head. Booth jumped over the balcony and ran out of the theater.
