The Liberator is a newspaper which deals with slavery. Created by William Lloyd Garrison who was against slavery. -
Compromise of 1850
Proposed by Henry Clay of Kentucky who also proposed the Missouri Compromise. Read that California would be a free state Washington D.C would have illegal slavery and that anyone who helped a slave would be imprisoned. -
Uncle Tom's Cabin
Written by Harriet Beecher Stowe and stated that slavery was a brutal and cruel system. -
Kansas-Nebraska act
Proposed by Stephen Douglas, a senator from Illinois, and stated that popular sovereignty would decide if Nebraska and Kansas would have slavery. This act also repealed the Missouri Compromise. -
James Buchanan become the 15th president
The electoral vote gave Buchanan the victory in the Presidential election in 1856. -
Dredd Scott Desicion
Sued for freedom because his owner and himself lived in free territories so he thought he should be a free man. -
John Brown's raid at Harper's Ferry
John Brown led a revolt to arm slaves to their freedom, he was eventually caught and hung. -
Abraham Lincoln is elected 16th President of the United States
Abraham Lincoln was elected the 1st Republican President of the United States. -
South Carolina succeeds the Union
South Carolina leave the Union because they feel Abraham Lincoln will free the slaves and had threatened before if he became President they would leave. -
Battle of Fort Sumter
The confederates wanted Fort Sumter because they felt that U.S. arsenals should not be on their land. This was the 1st battle of the civil war. -
1st Battle of Bull Run
It was the 1st major battle of the Civil War. The South won and pushed the North back to D.C. -
Emancipation Proclamation
Stated that all slaves would be free. -
Battle of Gettsburg
Each side ran into each other and started fighting. The North won but it was not a clear who won. -
Sherman's march to sea
Evacuated the city of Atlanta, and the North had so many soldiers that the South's 10,000 fled. -
Surrender at Appomattox Courthouse
The final battle of the Civil War where the South finally surrendered after 4 years of battling the North. -
Lincoln's Assassination
He was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth on Good Friday at a play he was attending.
