Missouri Compromise
-As America expands west, north and south politicians argued over slavery growth.
-Henry Clay created a compromise, known as "The Missouri Compromise," that settled the debates.
-The Missouri Compromise was a line drawn at 36°30'.
-Maine would be a free state, Arkansas would be open to slavery.
Any states above the line would be free, any states below would be slave.
It helped maintain the balance of free and slave states. -
The Nullification Crisis
-Southern states, like South Carolina, felt tariffs were unconstitutional.
-South Carolina nullifies the tariffs.
-The federal government did not agree and South Carolina threatened to secede.
-Henry Clay created a compromise that allowed South Carolina to stay by lowering the tariffs. -
Dred Scott Decision
-Dred Scott went to trial to sue for his freedom in 1847
-10 years later, his case was brought before the supreme court
-Court claimed that slaves as well as free blacks are not american citizens
-Says federal government does not have the power to prohibit slavery in its territories -
Compromise of 1850
-Debate whether territories obtained from Mexico should be admitted as free or slave states.
-Henry Clay, created, "The Compromise of 1850."
-California would be aditted as a free state; slave trading in Washington D.C. to be abolished.
-Congress could not pass laws banning slavery from the Mexican territories. -
Fugitive Slave Act of 1850
-Act passed by Congress, that allowed slave owners capture slaves that escaped to the north.
-Many abolitionists did not like the act.
-This led to John Brown's raid and the civil war. -
Bleeding Kansas
-
-It introduced popular soverenignity.
-Many proslavery people came to Kansas to vote for proslavery representatives in Kansas.
-As a result, Kansas had a proslavery government.
-The abolitionists created a new government, but was attacked by proslavery forces.
-Abolitionist, John Brown killed many of proslavery people to avenge the attack. - -
Attack on Harpers Ferry
-Led by John Brown
-Planned to capture the arsenal at an army base in Harpers Ferry
-Wanted slaves to fight for their freedom, but none joined in battle
-Brown and his men were captured and Brown was put to death
-Raised tensions of slaverybetween north and south -
Election of 1860
-Lincoln wins election
-Lincoln says he would not abolish slavery in the south
-South does not trust him and secedes
