    Formation of the American Colonization Society
    The formation of the american colonization society (ACS) was based on the idea to set up an area in africa where current free african-americans could move to. Liberia was settled in 1822 in order to slow the growth of slavery in the country. Free african-americans were being enslaved by accident at this time, and this angered slaveholders (South).

    The Liberator was a magazine published by William Llyod Garrison. The opinions expressed in it advocated for the ending of slavery in the south. It was never published nor read in the south and likly angered many who lived in the south at the time.

    Tariff of 1832
    The tariff of 1832 was aimed at improving america's industrial sector at the time. As an agraian southern state, South Carolina wanted cheap, imported cloths for slaves, however with this tariff the prices of such clothing go up. South Carolina, after the enactment of this tariff, moved to nullify it and threated to secede from the country. To this, Jackson resoponded in a letter to South Carolina.

    The Gag Rule was a ruling within congress that any discussion or action about a protest involving the topic of slavery would not be heard. After and incresing number of northern congressmen began supporting anti-savery rhetoric, tension built between the south and the north.     This act came as a part of the Omnibus Laws through the Compromise of 1850. It set up a system where any run-away slave, even in the north, would become a wanted person. Many who then hunted these run-away slaves would mistakingly take a wrong african-american which led to tension between the north and the south.

    Pottawattamie Creek Massacre
    Kansas had adopted the policy of popular sovreignty making slavery was a souce of controversy in the state. John Brown, a radical abolitionist from kansas, was enraged by the demenor of law enforcement and pro-slavery advocists towards abolitionists in Lawrence Kansas. He then gathered forces and attacked a number of slave catchers and other proponants of a pro-slavery agenda.
  • Dred Scott v. Sandford

    Dred Scott v. Sandford
    Dred Scott was sueing his owners for freedom after his daughter was born in Louisiana (which, under law, gives freedom to the Scott family). Judge Roger Taney, a democrat, ruled against Dred Scott. This case unvailed that a portion of the country held the opinion that people of color were indeed inferior to whites and that they don't deserve the same rights.
