Invention of the cotton gin
It changed the economics of the cotton industry, more cotton could be processed in less time, with less labor now needed to produce cotton, the slavery demand should of limped off but it instead increased. Planters want to expand their business but the decision on whether or not slavery will be allowed in the new territories causes tension -
Louisiana Purchase
The expansion of westward land also came with a decision on whether or not slavery should expand too. The south depended on slavery because of the cotton industry. The acquisition of all this new land created tension between the north and south -
Missouri Compromise
The missouri compromise was enacted to regulate slavery in western states. It laid down the groundwork for the civil war because it divided the states and contributed to the segregation of the union. -
Fugitive Slave Act
Northern states began requiring trials before the south could enforce the return of “fugitive” slaves. More northern citizens began to oppose this act and increased tensions between the south and north which led to the secession of the south. -
Kansas-Nebraska Act
It was tensely debated on whether or not Kansas should remain a free state or not. Kansas became a battleground for pro and anti slavery groups. -
Lincolns Inauguration
The new president said he had no plans to mess with slavery and that he would not accept succession. -

Lincoln was assassinated by a southern slave supporter, John Wilkes Booth, in Fords Theater because Booth was a racist, white supremacist
