3/5 Compromise
This compromise stated that all slaves counted for 3/5 of a person on census and determined the amount of electoral votes and represetation in congress. -
Cotton Gin
A machine that quickly and easily separates cotton from their seeds, allowing for much greater productivity than hand picking it. This machine increased the need and want for slaves. -
Missouri Compromise
This compromise was about slavery in the wester territories. It prohibited slavery in the former Louisiana Territory north of the parallel 36°30′ north except within the boundaries of the proposed state of Missouri. -
Mexican War
This was an armed conflict between the United States and Mexico from 1846 to 1848. Mexico considered Texas part of their territory but the U.S wanted to turn it into a state which led to the Mexican-American war. Mexico accepted the loss of Texas and thereafter cited the Rio Grande as its national border. -
Uncle Toms Cabin
This was a book about slavery written by Harriet Beacher Stowe. This book is said to have been a large reason for the start of the Civil war. -
Compromise of 1850
According to the compromise, Texas would release the land in dispute but would be given 10 million dollars.California would be admitted as a free state. -
Election of Abraham Lincoln
In the 1850's the United states was begining to seperate because of opposing thoughts on slavery. When the north secured enough electoral votes to get Abraham Lincoln into office it was practicly a decloration of war to the South.
