    This Compromise sparked discussion regarding the future of acquiring statehood. It made people question the expansion of slavery in new territories growing during the peak of manifest destiny. It sparked sectionalism between slave states and free states.

    Publication of "Appeal to the Coloured Citizens of the World"
    David Walker, a free black man, wrote book claiming freedom had to be fought for by slaves rather than slaves waiting to be granted freedom.
    This contributed to sectionalism because the ideas in the book were controversial and, in the eyes of plantation owners, threatening and dangerous.

  • Nat Turner's Slave Rebellion

    Nat Turner's Slave Rebellion
    Nat Turner led the most successful slave revolt, killing 57 white people in one night. Two months later he was caught and hanged.
    The plantation owners were scared that more slaves would be inspired to revolt.
    This contributed to sectionalism because southerners were terrified and angry that there was still a growing amount of slave-sympathy in the north.

    Raid on Harper's Ferry
    John Brown attacked the biggest federal arsenal in the south. He fails because the slaves he had hoped would aid him did not show, and sentenced to death.
    This contributed to the start of the Civil War because it showed that some abolitionists were willing to kill or be killed over the issue of slavery. The South felt defensive and passionate about their long-held rights to slavery.
