    Missouri Compromise
    Things started to get heated between Northern polticians and Southern politicians over slavery. Henry Clay is know as the Great Compromiser settles the argument by letting Maine in as a free stats and Arkansas as a slave state. It helped maintain the balance between slave and free states.
  • The Nullification Crisis

    The Nullification Crisis
    Is due to the passing of tariff laws of 1828 and 1832. Southerner states thought the tariffs were unfair and only supported the North. John C. Calhoun, vice president, said that any state could nullify a federal law that is it unconstitutional. The federal government denied South Carolina's agrument. South Carolina threathen to secede. Once again Hnery Clay came up with a solution and lowered tariffs.
  • Compromise of 1850

    Compromise of 1850
    Congress had many debates about the new territories acquired from Mexico as being free or slave steates. Again Henry Clay helped make a compromise. California wouldbe a free state and the slave trade would be banned in Washingto D.C. No laws would be passed for banning slavery from the rest of the terriotories acquired from Mexioc.

    Fugitive Slave Act of  1850
    The Fugitive Slave Act was passed by congress in 1850. It permitted the capture of African Americans who fled to the North to escpape bondage. It conviced many abolitionists that radical measures were needed to end slavery. These laws created even more tension and led to the John Brown's raid which also led to the Civil War
  • Bleeding Kansas

    Bleeding Kansas
    There was going to be a election of an official state legislature before Kansas was a state. 5000 people of proslavery from Missouri came and voted for proslavery representatives. Kansas had a proslavery lehislature. Anti-slavery people started there own government. The anit-slavery government got attacked by porslavery forces. To get revenge aboltionist John Brown murdered 12 anti-slavery people.
  • Dred Scott Decision

    Dred Scott Decision
    Dred Scott was a slave who lived in Illinois, a free state, and Wisconsin before going to the state of Missouri. Blacks or slaves could not become citizens of the United States. He went to court to grant his hope of freedom. The court declared the Missouri Compromise unconstitutional. Slavery was permitted all over the country's territories.
  • Attack on Harpers Ferry

    Attack on Harpers Ferry
    John Brown wanted slaves to fight for their freedom. He planned to capture the arsenal at the army base in Harpers Ferry. Brown tried to get slaves to join him in the fight but none wanted to. Brown and his men were captured. Ten were killed. Abolionists saluted John Brown as he was put to death. Slavery had raised tensions in America.
  • Election of 1860

    Election of 1860
    Abraham Lincoln won the election of 1860. Southerner states didnt trust him because they thought Lincoln would end slavery. Southerner states started to secede from the Union after Lincoln was elected.
