  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
    The Missouri Compromise created more balance in the congress. This compromise made Missouri a slave state and Maine a free state. It also created a line, the 36°30' parallel, which created a barrier between the slave states, the south, and the free states, the north. Though many people thought this solved the United States issues, it didn't, it led to the Civil War. The north wanted to abolish slavery, and this compromise did not do so.
  • Nat Turner's Rebellion

    Nat Turner's Rebellion
    Nat Turner, a slave in Virgina, went on a rebellion killing many white slave owners. He did this because he felt he should have had more rights, even though he was a black slave. He was later captured and killed for his doings. This shows how slaves felt and even white abolitionist felt towards slave owners. It led to the Civil War because war seemed to be the only way to solve the problem.

    Compromise of 1850
    The Compromise of 1850 made California a free state and did not make the mexican cession area a slave or free area. While doing that, the fugitive slave was strengthen cause lots of issues between the north and south. Many people in the north did not agree with this act. This compromise just added even more reasons to why the Civil War occured.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

    Uncle Tom's Cabin
    Uncle Tom's Cabin was a book written by Harriet Beecher Stowe, an abolitionist. The north mostly consisted of people who did not want slavery to expand, but after reading this book they understood slavery even more and began to strongly disagree with slavery as a whole. The south did not like this book and wanted it to be taken of the shelves, but the courts ruled that unconstitutional. Conflict aroused due to this difference in opinion between the north and south.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    Kansas-Nebraska Act
    The Kansas-Nebraska Act was made to raise the 36°30' line. This would allow Kansas to become a slave state through popular sovereignty. This led to Bleeding Kansas. This event was where pro-slavery people only allowed pro-slavery people through the boarder of Kansas. This made many people, most anti-slavery people upset because they felt it was unfair that people had the authority to do that. This showed that the United States had real problems that some people believe needed to be fixed by war.
  • John Brown's Raid

    John Brown's Raid
    John Brown's Raid was led by John Brown, a white abolitionist. He went into Virgina, freeing slaves, hoping to obtain weapons to fight slave owners. Unfortunately, he was surrounded by soldiers, and tried for treason. This gave an example of a white person, who is not as effected by slavery as black people, wanting to help.
  • Abraham Lincoln's Election

    Abraham Lincoln's Election
    Abraham Lincoln's Election seemed to be the breaking point of the United States. Lincoln was anti-slavery causing many southern people to disagree with him. Due to him winning the presidential election, South Carolina began the trend of states seceding from the Union, causing the Civil War between the northerners and the southerners.
