First battle of the Civil War, The Confederates won. No one died, nor was injured.

First Battle of Bull Run (Manassas)

Jul 21, 1861

First Major land battle. Demonstrated the war would be lengthy and costly. Confederate Victory.

Battle of Shiloh

Apr 6, 1862

Bloodiest battle up to that time with 23,746 casualties. Union Victory.

Battle of Antietam

Sep 17, 1862

Single bloodiest day battle in American History, with 22,717 causalities. No winner, great losses on both sides.

Emancipation Proclamation

Jan 1, 1863

This document freed the confederate slaves, but not the union's. Passing this caused conflicts and made the war about slavery.

Battle of Gettysburg

Jul 1, 1863

This was the bloodiest battle of the war, with 51, 112 causalities. Lincoln made a speech later on about this battle, named "The Gettysburg Address"

Battle of Vicksburg

Jul 4, 1863

Union victory, This led to Grant being appointed General-in-chief.

Lincoln's plan for Reconstruction

1865

Lincoln wanted to be lenient with South, he said they didn't need to be punished, the country needed to heal. He wanted to rebuild South's economy. He died before he could carry out any plans of this.

Appomattox Courthouse Battle

Apr 9, 1865

Union Victory, this was the final battle in the Civil War. General Lee's army disbanded, ending the battle and the war.

Lincoln Assassination

Apr 15, 1865

John Wilkes Booth, a well-known actor, went into the President's booth in Ford's Theatre and shot him in the back of the head. The next morning, President Abraham Lincoln died. A week later, Booth was found and killed.

13th Amendment

Dec 6, 1865

Abolished slavery, after Lincoln's death, as part of reconstruction. Didn't give African Americans same rights though.

14th Amendment

1868

Made Freedman US citizens; provided "due process". Still couldn't vote.
