Missouri Compromise 1820-1821
Maine was admitted as a free state and Missouri as a slave state. The rest of the Louisiana Territory was split into two parts the middle was at the 36 30' north latitude. The north side of the line slavery was illegal, on the south side of the line slavery was legal. The president at the time was John Quincey Adams. -

Santa Fe Trail
One of the busiest routes which streched 780 miles. It went from Independence, Missouri to Santa Fe in the Mexican province of New Mexico. -
San Felipe de Austin
It is a colony where "no drunkard, no gambler, no profane swearer, and no idler would be allowed". It was established in 1821. It was etablished by Stephen F Austin, and it was possible because his father had received a land grant and Stephen had gotten permission by Spain and Mexico to carry out his fathers project. -
Mexico abolishes slavery
Mexico had already abolished slavery in 1829, however slaves were continued to be brought in by american settlers. This was a problem in Texas because it caused tension between the two people. -
The Liberator
A newspaper made by William Lloyd Garrison which wanted immediate emancipation. -
Nat Turner's Rebellion
Nat Turner led 50 followers and attacked 4 plantations. They killed 60 whites, however they were later caught and killed. -
Stephen F. Austin goes to jail
After coming home from Mexico City in the late 1833s Austin was areested for inciting revolution. -

The 1836 rebellion in which texas gained its independence. -
Oregon Trail
It streched from Independence, Missouri to Oregan City, Oregan. The first travlers were two Methodist missionaries, Marcus and Narcissa Whitman. It proved that wagons could travel on the Oregan Trail. -

Polk wanted California, New Mexico and the rest of what is today the U.S. Southwest. Frederick Douglass made The North Star, the star that guided runaway slaves to freedom. Douglass wanted the abolistion without violence. -
Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo
A treaty where mexico agreed to the Rio Grande as the border between Texas and Mexico and ceded the New Mexico and California to US. -
Compromise of 1850
Clay made a compromise to stop the Southern sstates from secession. California would be a free state but there was a more effective fugitive slave law. -

A system of escape routes for runaway slaves. -
Fugitive Slave Act
Alleged fugitive slaves were not entitled to trail by jury and anyone helping them could get 6 months in jail or a 1,000 dollar fee. -
Harriet Tubman
Took 19 trips as a conducter for the underground railroads and help 300 slaves. -
Uncle Toms Cabin
Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote a book about how slavery is not only a political contest but also a moral struggle. -

Nebraska would be a north state and Kansas would be a south state -

Dred Scott was a slave whose owner took him from a slave state to a free state to a slave state. he sued for his freedom because he said since he lived in a free state he was a free man. the court ruled against dred Scott. -

Abraham Lincoln becomes president
in the 1860 presidential election Lincoln became president he was successful because he was more moderate and didn't have crazy ideas. -

In the spring of 1862 the battle of Antietam happened. It was the bloddiest battle in history. The end result, Lincoln removed general McClellan from command. -

Grant tried several attempts to reach Vickburg to take it away from the Confederates. But, he sent his calvary, and broke through. Then took over Jackson the capital of the state. -

Surrender at Appmattox Courthouse
It was located at the Confederate capital, Richmond. Lee and Grant met at a private home to arrange Confederate surrender. The terms were, Grant paroled Lee's soldiers and sent them home with their pocessions, and three days worth of rations. Also, officers could keep their side arms.
