Missouri Compromise
In 1819 Missouri wanted to enter the union as a slave state.This woud upset the balnce of power in congress.Tensions over slavery increased.A compromised was reached that Missouri would enter a slave state and no slave state could be made in the future in the remaining Louisianna Territory above the 36 30 line.Maine would enter as a free state. -
Abolitionists movement
Abolitionst movement is the people who were against slavery and did something about it.They wanted to fight for what they believe and they believe that every man is created equal and they should be able to live their life with freedom.Few abolitionists were william llyod Garrison,Harriet Tubman,Frederick Douglass,Harriet Beecher Stowe, and John Brown they all had motives to end savery and be against it and they did something about it and the people who wanted slavery didnt like it. -

Manifest Destiny was the period of american expansion that it was destined to move coast to coast.Their mission was to make everyone free to have freedom of equality.Settlers moved west to make a new civilization.even though they thought this was Gods grand mission for them it also seperated them.as the United states started to gain territory and they moved west with slavery and where it would be allowed started to make conflict between the people who supported slavery and who were against it -

Compromise 1850
The misouri compromise fixed slavery for a little while but slavery was still inatct.So the Compromise of 1850 allowed california to be a free state by popular sovereignty.It ended the slave trade in washington D.C and made it easier for southeners to recover slaves. -
Fugitive Slave Act
Fugitive slave act was used to arrest runaway slaves and they have no right in a jury they are immedietly guilty.If you were helping a runaway slave given them shelter or food you were sentenced imprisonment and a fine. -
Kansas Nebraska Act
Kansas Nebraska act split staes into free states and slave states.Popular sovereignty allowed settlers of a federal territory to decide the slavery question without the government interference.North was outraged by it and the south supported it. -
Dred Scott V. Sanford
Dred Scott was born as a slave he argued that he should be set free because he was illegally held when his master took him to Illinois and Wisconsin.They were both free territories and soon this made it to the supreme court.The court saod that no one can lose their property just because the state of savery was illegal slaves were considered property even the Missouri compromise was declared unconstitutional.this caused conflict the north was outraged by this and the south were thrilled -

The Election of 1860 demonstrated sectional divisions within the United States because Brekinridge haad all the states going to the south and Abraham Lincoln had all th states going to the north.The issue was slavery Abraham lincoln didnt support slavery,Stephen Douglas didnt want territories to choose slavery,John C. Breckenridge was pro-slavery,John Bell also supported slavery.The majority of the popular votes and electoral went to Abraham Lincoln. -
Secession of Southern States
The first state to secede from the United States was South Carolina and 11 more states seceded from the United Sates.They were southern states they seceded from the United States because they wanted slavery and that they believed that their property and peace was being endangered.
