    Years leading up to the Missouri Compromise, that occurred in 1820, there was strain between pro-slavery and anti-slavery, fractions in the U.S congress and across the country. Then in 1819 Missouri requested for admission to the union as slave state which upset the balance between slave states and free states. Congress wanted to keep the peace so they arranged a two part compromise granting Missouri's request but, also letting Maine be a free state.

    Underground Railroad

    The underground railroad was a place where slaves escape enslavement. They were escaping the boarders of Kentucky Virginia and Maryland. Conductors guided the slaves to hiding places this included private homes, churches and school houses. These hiding places were called stations safe houses and deposits the people hosting were stationsmasters. The trails were Ohio to Indiana and Iowa many headed north through Pennsylvania to New England or through Detroit the final destination was in Canada.
