Battle of Fort Sumter
When Fort Sumter was resupplid on April 12th, Confederate troops began usings shelling it from the mainland. Surprisingly, no soldiers on either side of the war were killed by an enemy fire. The bombardment lasted from at least 34 hours strait. They didn't give up until the Union soldiers surrendered. -
The Bull Run
This battle of the Bull Run was the first major land battle of the Civil War, the battle occured near Manassas, Virginia. This is the battle that Jackson got the name "Stonewall". The Union had nearly 3,000 casualties. Union forces from Wwashington, DC had 28,450 troops that were under the command of General Irvin McDowell. His plan was to surprise 32,230 Confederate troops. -
Battles of Fort Henry and Fort Donelson
Both battles happened in the same month. They were 10 miles away from each other. This was the Unions first victory. Union casualties were 2,331 and Confederacy was more than 15,000 casualties. The Union could now move south through Tennessee. -
Battle of the Monitor and the Merrimack
The battle of Hampton Roads was the most famous and well-known naval battle of the war. There was no winner of this batte but it got nationwide attention and revolutionized how warships were built. -
Battle and Capture of New Orleans
The capture of New Orleans by the Union was a major turning point in the war. New Orleans was the Confederacy's largest city and a trading location with a powerful and economical port. -
The Battle of Antietam
This battle was the first battle of the war in Northern soil. This battle wasa the bloodiest day in the war. There were 23,000 casualties and had more than 4,800 people killed. -
The Emancipation
The Emancipation Proclamation was an executive order that Abraham Lincoln signed. It freed 3.1 million slaves in Confederate States of America. After this happened it enraged the south and turned this into a total war to destory the South. -
Battle of Gettysburg
This battle was the bloodiest battle of the war, it had over 46,000 casualities - nearly 8,000 were killed. This battle lasted 3 days and was the turning point in the war. -
The Battle of Petersburg
Grant focuses on important railroad communication and junction outside Richmond. Petersburg starts with his troops living in trenches which went on for 50 miles. -
Battle Of Atlanta
Union forces lead by William T. Sherman wanted to neutralize the important rail and supply hub. The Confederate forces were defending the city under the comand of John B. Hood. -
Abraham Lincoln wins re-election
Sherman's victory in Atlanta boosted Lincoln's popularity. This was one of the most important moments in the war. -
Lee surrenders to Grant at Appomattox Courthouse
After the Richmond battle, Lee's troops were surrounded, and on April 7, Grant called Lee to surrender. On April 9, the two commanders met and agreed on the terms of surrender.
