13th Admendment
The abolishment of Slavery and to punish those found guilty of having slaves. -
14th amendment
Rights of citizenship, due process of law, and equal protection of the law. The 14th amendment has become one of the most used amendments in court to date regarding the equal protection clause. -
15th amendment
Right for any color, race , and ethicity to vote in an election. Now people who are American can vote in an election, and it doesn’t discriminate on the basis of race. -
Tuskegee Institute
It was created as a place to teach people of color, and to teach more people of color how to teach. Lewis Adams made a deal that he would bring African Americans to vote in the 1880s election and in return Alabama legislation would pass a bill to provide a school for “ Colored Teachers”. -
Plessy v. Ferguson
Homer Plessy who was one eighth African-American, was asked to sit in the colored part of the train even though he bought a ticket in the nicer part of the train that was whites only. He refused and the case was taken to the supreme court where they claimed that the city of Ferguson was just because it was “Separate but Equal”. -
NAACP Founded
It was created to protest the violence against African Americans, mainly in response to the lynching of African Americans. The group was created by white and black influencial leaders. The NAACP used to help people of color obtain equal rights and was a big fan of non violent protest, they still exsist today and have programs to help people of color and reward those who have achieved excellence. -
19th Amendment
Decided that discriminating of the basis of sex is wrong and gave women the right to vote. (Women did not obtain equal rights just the right to vote). -
Equal Rights Amendment
It was a proposed admendment that would ban discrimination of the basis of sex. It would allow women to do everything a man could do. Making women and men equal in every aspect. It didn’t make it very far in the 20’s -

Cesar Chavez
He was a chicano american who fought for Latino Civil Rights throughout his lifetime. He also co-founded National Farm Workers Assocation which encouraged migrant farmers to fight for better wages and conditions. -
Executive Order 9981
It desegrated all the armed forces and abolished discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, and national origin. Allowing all races to be equal in the armed forces, they would have intergrated units for the first time, and going into Vietnam. -
Brown V. Board or Education
Was a landmark court case that ruled the segregation of schools based on race is unconstitutional and banned segregation in all public schools. They would rule against Plessy v. Ferguson stating that seperate but equal has no part in our public schools. -
Montgomery Bus Boycott
The boycott started after Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to give up her seat and four days later all African Americans agreed to boycott the buses for a day, and after one successful day they did it every day for six months until, the governor agreed to desegerate public transport. -
Southern Christian Leadership Conference
The SCLC was a group that wanted to continue such non-violent practices like what was done in Montgomery. It largley followed in the practices preached by Reverend King, in civil disobedience. -
The Little Rock 9
Nine African American students enrolled in an all white school in the deep south, The Governor tried to send the Arkansas Guard to block them from entering but the president sent the national guard to escort the kids to class. Ernest Green was the only senior of the nine and he graduated but the Governor shut down all schools for the following year so that schools didn’t have to be intergrated. -
Civil Rights Act of 1957
It established a civil rights division within the Justice Department. It also encouraged federal officials to prosecute those who conspired to prevent anyone from voting -
Chicano Movement
It was a movement for Mexcian Amercians to gain social and political equality in the US. A series of murals were painted throughout the 60s to encourage Chicano pride and equality. -
Greensboro, NC sit-ins
Most restaurants were segregated back then and the bar area was white only. But on Febuarary 1st, African Americans decided to protest this segregation by sitting at the bar area and trying to order food. It was successful and after a few sit ins they gained the right to be served at the counter. -
Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee
The Student Non-Violent Coordinating, was founded to give younger African Americans a voice in the civil rights movement allowing them to be more influential. -
Freedom Riders
Where the African Americans would ride into the south on buses, to try and enforce the supreme courts ruling to intergrate public transport. They took many trips and it was very dangerous because they would be attacked many times on these rides. It ended with the South Intergrating the buses. -
24th Amendment
It made having a poll tax illegal, basing that it would force people to pay for there born rights.
