Civil Rights Timeline

  • 13th Amendment

    successfully abolished slavery in the United States
  • 14th Amendment

    Rights of citizenship, due process of law, and equal protection of the law. The 14th amendment has become one of the most used amendments in court to date regarding the equal protection clause.
  • 15th Amendment

    This Amendment allowed minorities like African Americans to vote and could not be discriminated.
  • Tuskegee Institute

    Booker T. Washington created collages for African Americans that opened up more jobs for them since they were now educated.
  • Plessy v. Ferguson

    Homer Adolph Plessy was classified as 1/8 black and was arrested for sitting in an all white train. A court case was later made and claimed "separate but equal". This allowed the court to rule segregation all over the United States.
  • NAACP

    The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is a bi-racial civil rights movement to further advance the equality for African Americans. Founded by W. E. B. Du Bois, Mary White Ovington, Moorfield Storey and Ida B. Wells.
  • 19th Amendment

    This Amendment allowed for women to vote (women's suffrage) all over the United States
  • Executive Order 9981

    The Executive Order 9981 is a document that banned the military from treating people differently because of their race or color
  • Montgomery Bus Boycott

    Since Rosa Parks was arrested for not giving up her seat in a bus, Martin Luther King Jr. decided to boycott a bus, after almost a year the supreme court ruled that it was illegal for public transportation to be segregated.
  • SCLC

    The Southern Christian Leadership Conference formed to be able to non violently advance the cause of civil rights in America,it assisted organizations that worked for the full equality of African Americans. Founded by: Martin Luther King Jr., Ralph Abernathy, Fred Shuttlesworth, Bayard Rustin, Joseph Lowery
  • Civil Rights Act of 1957

    The Civil Rights Act of 1957 empowered federal officials to prosecute people that denied another citizen's right to vote.
  • SNCC

    The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee was formed in order to give African American men the same right to vote as white men. Was founded by Ella Baker, Julian Bond, Diane Nash, Bernard Lafayette, Charles Sherrod.
  • Chicano Movement

    The Chicano Movement's main goal was to have Mexican American empowerment,restoration of land, rights for farm workers and education reforms.
  • Cesar Chavez

    Cesar Chavez was a farmer and the founder of United Farm Workers. He fought for Hispanic rights and minorities.
  • 24th Amendment

    This amendment allowed for the abolishment of poll taxes which allowed many more people to vote like minorities.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1964

    The Civil Rights Act of 1964 outlawed the discrimination of a person based on their color, race, religion, or sex and prohibited racial segregation in schools.
  • Voting Rights Act of 1965

    Voting Rights Act of 1965 ensured that African Americans could vote under the 15th Amendment. It overthrew Jim Crow Laws.
  • Black Panthers

    Bobby Seale created Black Panthers Party, which was a self-defense revolutionary political organization and promoted black pride.
  • Thurgood Marshall appointed to the Supreme Court

    Thurgood Marshall was the first African American appointed to the United States Supreme Court and helped end segregation
  • AIM

    American Indian Movement was a movement to help native Americans get equality and to protest for the injustices that the government had put on them. Was founded by: Dennis Banks, Russell Means, Clyde Bellecourt.
