14th Amendment
This amendment gave citizenship to anyone born in the United States, and equal protection of the law. This is a very commonly used amendment. -
Plessy V. Ferguson
This was a Supreme Court case that said that racial segregation was okay. This is commonly know as the "separate but equal" doctrine. -
NAACP Created
This was a civil rights organization created by W.E.B Du Bois, Ida B. Wells, Mary White Ovington and Moorfield Storey. -
19th Amendment
This amendment gave women the right to vote. This is important because women fought for a long time for this. -
ERA Proposed
This was first proposed by Alice Paul, a suffrage movement leader. This was proposed in 1923, but not passed until 50 years later in 1972. The Equal Rights Amendment was designed to get equality among genders. -
Executive Order 9981
This was issued by President Truman to get rid of discrimination in the Armed Forces. This order led to the end of segregation in the services. -
Brown V. Board
This was a Supreme Court case that ruled that segregation of schools is unconstitutional. -
Montgomery Bus Boycott
The boycott was a protest to try to eliminate segregation on buses. It went on for about a year in the 50s. -
Civil Rights Act of 1957
This civil rights act was the first since 1875. It further protected the rights of people within the jurisdiction of the United States. -
Chicano Mural Movement
This was a movement for Mexican Americans to become more recognized. -
Greensboro Sit In
The sit in was an act of nonviolent protest against the segregation in restaurants. -
Freedom Riders
Freedom Riders were activists who purposefully rode buses into the Deep South, which was segregated still. The buses contained both whites and African Americans. -
Letter from Birmingham Jail
This letter was written by Martin Luther King Jr. while in the Birmingham City Jail. He wrote about hoe he agreed with civil disobedience. -
I Have A Dream Speech
This speech given by MLK Jr. took place at the March on Washington. He addressed how African Americans want civil and economic rights and the termination of racism in America. -
24th Amendment
This amendment prohibited any poll tax in elections. -
Civil Rights Act of 1964
This civil rights act prohibited discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex and national origin. -
March from Selma , Alabama
The March from Selma on March 7th was also known as " Bloody Sunday," because of the 600 activists that were met by billy clubs and tear gas. -
Voting Rights Act of 1965
This Act gave voting rights to every race. -
Cesar Chavez
He was a labor union leader in the United States. He was very influential in the United Farm Workers Union an also led the Grape Boycott.
