  • 14th Amendment

    14th Amendment
    This amendment gave citizenship to anyone born in the United States, and equal protection of the law. This is a very commonly used amendment.
  • Plessy V. Ferguson

    Plessy V. Ferguson
    This was a Supreme Court case that said that racial segregation was okay. This is commonly know as the "separate but equal" doctrine.
  • NAACP Created

    NAACP Created
    This was a civil rights organization created by W.E.B Du Bois, Ida B. Wells, Mary White Ovington and Moorfield Storey.
  • 19th Amendment

    19th Amendment
    This amendment gave women the right to vote. This is important because women fought for a long time for this.
  • ERA Proposed

    ERA Proposed
    This was first proposed by Alice Paul, a suffrage movement leader. This was proposed in 1923, but not passed until 50 years later in 1972. The Equal Rights Amendment was designed to get equality among genders.
  • Executive Order 9981

    Executive Order 9981
    This was issued by President Truman to get rid of discrimination in the Armed Forces. This order led to the end of segregation in the services.
  • Brown V. Board

    Brown V. Board
    This was a Supreme Court case that ruled that segregation of schools is unconstitutional.
  • Montgomery Bus Boycott

    Montgomery Bus Boycott
    The boycott was a protest to try to eliminate segregation on buses. It went on for about a year in the 50s.

    This civil rights act was the first since 1875. It further protected the rights of people within the jurisdiction of the United States.

    This was a movement for Mexican Americans to become more recognized.

    The sit in was an act of nonviolent protest against the segregation in restaurants.
  • Freedom Riders

    Freedom Riders were activists who purposefully rode buses into the Deep South, which was segregated still. The buses contained both whites and African Americans.

    This speech given by MLK Jr. took place at the March on Washington. He addressed how African Americans want civil and economic rights and the termination of racism in America.
