Civil Rights Movement Begins
The Civil Rights movement is where change began. Without the start, the success wouldn't have followed. Many events followed to end segregation. -
Seperate but Equal Doctrine
In 1954, the "separate but equal" doctrine was overturned. The supreme court overturned the doctrine because it was " denying equal access to education based on race violated the equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment" (Askew). This was the beginning of desegregation in schools. -
Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka
The supreme court case ruled segregation in public schools to be unconstitutional. "Plessy v. Ferguson and Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka were two of the U.S. Supreme Court's historic decisions on civil rights."(“Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka | Definition, Facts, & Significance | Britannica”). As a result public schools were no longer segregated. -
Segregated seating unconstitutional
After Rosa Parks had refused to give up her seat to a white man on a bus and was sent to prison. A boycott of the Montgomery Bus system for 381 days had occurred. Later, the Supreme court ruled Segregated seating on buses unconstitutional. -
Little Rock Nine
Nine Students who were known as the Little Rock Nine were the first black students to attend the formerly segregated Central high school. -
I Have a Dream Speech
The 'I Have a Dream' speech had a major impact on the civil rights movement. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered the speech at Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC in front of civil rights marchers. -
1964 Civil Rights Act
The Civil Rights Act of 1964 made huge headway for black employees. The act ended segregation in the workforce. Based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. -
24th Amendment
The House of Representatives passed the 24th amendment in 1962. This amendment outlaws poll taxes as a requirement to vote in elections. The amendment became a part of the constitution on January 23, 1964. -
Voting Rights Act
The act outlawed racial discrimination in voting. This act enforced the 15th amendment. -
1991 Civil Rights Act
The 1991 Civil Rights Act is a U.S. labor law. It expanded on the 1964 Civil Rights Act. This act outlaws discrimination of employment based on race, gender, religion, and nationality.
