Brown vs Board of Education
Brown vs Board of education which was a court case that had to do with public school. Before this they thought that separate was equal but this case made it clear that educational facilities were unequal because of the separation. The decision helped break up segregation and it was also was a spark to the Civil Rights Movement. -
The Murder of Emmett Till
Emmett Till was a fourteen year old african american who was murdered for flirting with a white woman. He was from Chicago and he was visiting family in Money mississippi. There was segregation in chicago but he wasn't ready for the level of segregation in Mississippi. Two men beat him nearly to death and then they shot him before they put barb wire around his neck and threw him in the Tallahatchie river. -
Rosa Parks
Rosa Parks would not give up her seat to a white male in Montgomery Alabama. She was arrested and then she got the leaders of the black community together to organize a boycott of the bus. It stated the day she was convicted for violating segregation laws. The boycott lasted for over a year, led by young MLK Jr. Rosa Parks got the supreme court to rule that bus segregation was unconstitutional. -
Little Rock Nine
Nine African American student enrolled in a formerly all white school. The governor of Arkansas sent in national guard to prevent the african american from getting in. Later that month President Eisenhower sent in Federal troop to escort the nine to school. Their first day on september 25th. -
Freedom Riders
A group of 13 African American and white civil rights activist launched the freedom rides. This was a series of bus trips through the south to protest segregation. The African American would try to use the "whites only" stuff and the whites used "blacks only". This drew international attention and several hundred joined the freedom riders. -
MLK's Arrest in Birmingham
Martin Luther King Jr was arrested in Birmingham Alabama. MLK was arrested for a non violent protest against segregation. During his time in jail he wrote the Letter from Birmingham Jail. He argued that individuals have the right to disobey unjust laws. -
Malcolm X Assassinated
Malcolm X was a Muslim minister and a human rights activist. He was a black nationalist and founder of the Organization of Afro-American Unity. Malcolm X was shot to death. Is believed that the assailant was a member of Black Muslim faith which Malcolm left in favor of orthodox muslim. -
Black Panthers
The Black Panthers were a group of black nationalist and socialist founded by Bobby Seale and Huey Newton. Their core practice was to monitor the behavior of the Oakland Police Department, and challenge police brutality in California. They created many community programs like free breakfast for children. -
Black Power
Stokely Carmichael, a leader of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee.Also know as SNCC. Stokley created the phrase black power in a speech in Seattle. He defines this as black pride. He also say that the coming together of black people to fight for their liberation by any means necessary. This raised alarms because many believed that civil right movement depends on nonviolent disobedience. -
MLK assassinated
In the last years of his life he faced a lot of criticism from younger African Americans who thought confrontation was a better approach to seek change. They stuck closer with Malcolm X who though that MLKs nonviolence was criminal because he though it continued suffering for African Americans.King sought to widen his appeal beyond his own race.
