Poll Tax
Tax that is partioned with a fixed amount given to someone so they are able to vote. -
Literacy Test
Government tests given to voters to test their literacy. If they pass they can vote. This was put in place so African Americans were not aloud to vote. -
Plessy v. Ferguson
Plessy convicted for sitting in'white' car of East of Louisiana Railroad. Effect was segregated train car and station sitting areas. -
19th Amendment
Prohibits the US from denying anyone from voting. -
Korematsu v United States
COngressional statutes gave military authority to leave out Japanese descendents and they were not considered American citizens. -
Sweatt v Painter
Sweatt's college application denied because of his race. -
Brown v Board of Education
Desegregation of public school by one African American girl in Topeka, KS. -
Mongomery Bus Boycott
Rosa Park refused to give up her seat on a bus to a white man. That lead to a boycott against the bus industry. -
24th Amendment
Abolished poll taxes -
Civil Rights Act of 1964
Forbids discriminations based on race, sex, religion, or origin. -
Voting Rights Act of 1965
Prohibits discrimination in voting. Women gain the right to vote. -
Robert Kennedy Speech
Senator Kennedy speaks in Indianapolis about the assassination of MLKJ. -
Reed v Reed
Gender Discrimination in Idaho, preference of male over females. Idaho automatically gave the estate to the male due to gender discrimination when dealing with a deceased person's home. -
Equal Rights Amerndment
Garuntees women the right to vote. -
Regents of the University of CA v Bakke
Bakke, 35 year old caucasin man, denied twice to the univeristy althouh he was highly qualified due to his race. -
Bowers v Hardwick
DIstrrtict court challenged the contituaionality of sodomy. -
Americans with Disablities Act
Prohibits discrimination against the disabled. -
Lawrence v Texas
Men arrested and convicted uopn false reports. The men were convicted because they violated Texas' Homosexuality Conduct Law. -
Fisher v Texas
Caucasuan female denied application to University of Texas because of race. -
