  • Brown vs. Board of Education Topeka Kansas

    Brown goes against the board of education in Topeka Kansas, so his daughter can attend a school that is overall better and closer to her house. This ended up with his daughter attending the white school. And the school ended up being desegregated.
  • Emmett Till Murder

    Young African American boy was kidnapped and murdered in Mississippi at 14 years old. This was a catalyst for the Civil Rights Movements. Young Emmett was killed for supposedly flirting with a white woman. His mom left the casket open at his funeral to show the world the ugly face of racism.
  • Montgomery Bus Boycott

    Due to Rosa Parks' being thrown off the bus and placed in jail for refusing to give up her seat for a white man. This caused the Montgomery bus company to lose money due to people boycotting the bus' service. This ended with the Montgomery bus company integrating their buses.
  • Southern Christian Leadership Conference

    The Montgomery bus boycotts were the catalyst for the founding of this group. This conference was an off shot of the Montgomery Improvement Association (MIA). The group wanted to end all racial segregation and promote equality for all people.
  • Greensboro Sit Ins

    Protesters of all races sat in a segregated lunch counter and refused to leave even after they were refused to be served. This left a lasting impact because they practiced non-violence. However some of the protesters were arrested for disturbing the peace and trespassing. The end result of this was the integration of the lunch counter.
  • James Meredith

    He was the first African American to attend and graduate from the University of Mississippi. Even tho he served in the United States Air Force from 1951 to 1960, the would not let him attend. Only under the protection of the federal law was he able to attend.
  • Letters from Birmingham Jail

    Martin Luther King Jr. tells the strategy of defending non-violent protesting. He makes the quote, "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere."
  • March on Washington

    Massive protest on Washington, in front of the Lincoln memorial. The march was for job, freedom, and to rid the United States of all inequalities for all people. This is where the famous "I Have A Dream" speech took place.
  • Civil Rights Act

    Lyndon B. Johnson prohibited segregation in the education sense and all public places. The passing of the 24th Amendment got rid of the poll taxes, along with suspending the literacy test. This also got many African Americans in a rural setting registered to vote. This greatly increased the number of African American voters.
  • Assassination of Martin Luther King Jr.

    The assassination occurred in Memphis Tennessee. Martin Luther King Jr. was a Baptist minister and one of the main leaders if not the leader of the Civil Rights Movement. He fought for segregation to be abolished in a non-violent way, and all he wanted was for people to get along peaceably. His assassination caused a sense of anger to surge throughout the United States along with a sense of mourning. This would be the beginning of the end of the Civil Rights Movement.
