This supreme court ruling supported the legal doctrine of segregation: Separate but Equal - Legal to segragate so long as the facilities for African American and Whites were "Equal". -
Desegregation of the Armed Forces
President Harry Truman desegregated the armed forces through an executive order after World War II. -
Sit-ins
After having been refused service at the lunch counter of a Woolworth's Greensboro, North Carolina, Joseph McNeill, a Negro college student, returned the next day with three classmates to sit at the counter each day. When an artical in the New York Times drew attention to the students' protest, they were joined by more students, both Black and White, and students across the nation were inspired to launch similar protest. -
Freedom Rides
The non-violent protest. In 1961, bus loads of people waged a cross-country campaign to try to end the segregation of bus terminals. However, was brutally received at many stops along the way. -
Civil Right Act
President Lyndon Johnson banned discrimination in employment based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. -
Voting Rights Act
In 1975 Congress passed another Voting Rights Act. This time to aid immigrants. The law require states and communities with large numbers of Non-English speaking residents to print the ballot in various foreign languages. -
Americans with Disabilities Act
Americans with Disabilities Act 1990 . Prohibited discrimination against people with physical or mental disabilities in employment, transportation, telephone services, and access to public buildings.
