  • Jamestown is set up

    It was the first European colony in North America.
  • Slaves in North America

    The first 20 slaves were sold to the settlers in Virginia.
  • The Mayflower reached America (Pilgrim Fathers)

    Because of this, the first 13 colonies were set up in America's Atlantic coast. They were divided in 3 main territories: New England (who's income came mainly from fishing activities and some industries), the Middle Colonies (who's income came mainly from industries) and the Southern Colonies (who's income came mainly from plantations of sugar and cotton). The Southern Colonies used slaves to work in this plantations. The economy was based in this system.

    US Supreme Court denied citizenship and basic rights to all blacks, whether slaves or free.
  • Civil War (1861-1865)

    There was a civil war between the North (against slavery) and the South (in favor of slavery) of the US. The North won and slavery was abolished. In consequence the Ku Klux Klan (KKK), an organization against black people in the Southern States, was stablished.
  • 14th Amendment Passes

    The 14th Amendment was passed in the US Constitution and African Americans became full citizens.
  • 15th Amendment passes

    The 15th Amendment was passed in the US Constitution states that the right to wote will not be denied on account of race.
  • 1st "Jim Craw" Law

    First segregation law in Tennesse: Blacks and whites should be separated in trains.
  • Approval of "Separated but Equal" Facilities

    The US Supreme Court approves laws requiring racial segregation, as long as the facilities for blacks were not inferior to those for whites.
  • National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is Founded

    A civil rights organization in the U.S. to advance justice for African Americans
  • De-Segregation in Education

    The US Supreme Court in Kansas ended legal racial segregation in public schools.
  • Montgomery Bus Boycott

    African American woman Rosa Parks's arrest after refusing to move to the back of the bus triggers a citywide boycott of the bus system.
  • De-Segregation in Education

    Racial regregation in public schools is abolished in the US.
