13th Amendment
The Thirteenth Amendment completed the abolition of slavery in the United States. This is signifigant because it was the first major step in the civil rights movement toward equality. -
14th Amendment
Allowed all persons born in the the United States equal representation under the law. This was important to the civil rights movement because it guarenteed African Americans a fair chance in court cases, where before this amendment in alot of cases it was very one sided. -
15th Amendment
Citizens of the U.S. are guarenteed the right to vote regardless of race.This is important to the civil rights movement because now that African Americans right to vote is protected it will become easier to get more bills passed because they will be able to vote on them. -
Plessey vs. Ferguson
The court case that declared that state laws stating that public faciliaties that were "seperate but equal" were legal. This was a step back for civil rights becaue it made some forms of segregation easier and protected by law. -
19th Amendment
Prohibits any U.S. citizen being denied the right to vote based on gender. This was a big step for the womens suffrage movement in that women had gotten the right to vote wich was one of the main goals for their movement. -
Executive Order of 1948
The amdendment that stated that racial segration in the army was no longer legal. This was a big step towards racial equality because civil rights activists were able to source the army as an example of races working together equally and fine. -
Brown vs. Board of Education
The court case that decided that segregaition in schools was unconstitutional and therefore illegal. This was an important case for the civil rights movemnt because civil rights activist were now able to cite this case in other cases as well as this being one of the first steps towards the next generation being less prejudiced and less racist. -
Rosa Parks refuses to give up her seat
Rosa Parks and African American woman who refused to give up her seat on a public bus. This was important to the civil rights movement because it led to the Montgomery Bus Boycott. -
Montgomery Bus Boycott
A social protest where the majority of African Americns in Montgomery Alabama boycotted the public busses. This was imporant because it provided and example of non-violent protesting being effective. -
Civil Rights Act of 1957
Protected American rights to vote. This was imporant to the civil rights movement because now that women and minorities have the right to vote some old thinkers tried to use under handed methods to stop them from voting, however this act helped guard against these kind of tricks and helped protect the Amercian citizens right to vote. -
24th Amendment
Forbid both the Congress and state goverments from enforcing a "poll tax". This amendment helped to protect the rights of the minorities to vote this was important to the civil rights movement because voting is how minorities are able to get there say and help change goverment. -
Civil Rights Act of 1964
A law that outlawed major forms of discrimination against African Americans and women. This was and imporant act to the civil rights movement because it made discrimination actually illegal, helping to get rid of things like "seperate bit equal". -
Voting Rights Act of 1965
A law that outlawed discriminatory voting practices. This was important to civil rights because it protected the minority rights to vote and influence govermnet. -
Civil Rights Act of 1968
A law that provided for equal housing opportunities regardless of race or national origin. This was an important act for civil rights because it provided care on a basis that was equal in the sense that it had nothing to do with race any longer.
