13th Amendment
At the end of the Civil War, this amendment to the Constitution abolished slavery and indentured servitude, giving African Americans a freedom that the had not seen before. -

Plessy v. Ferguson
Incorporated a separation of white areas and colored areas in public places. -

Allows every person, now including women, to vote freely. -
Korematsu v United States
Court case that decided in favor of government, stating that asian ameicans could be detained in the name of espionage. -
Sweatt v Painter
One of two court cases that led to the desegregation of schools. -
Jim Crow Laws Overturned
Laws concerning the separatrion of white and colored people began to be overturned. -
Brown v. Board of Education
School segregation was officially banned after the ruling in this court case. -
Montgomery Bus Boycott
African Americans in Montgomery boycotted public transportation in the fallout of the Rosa Parks incident. -
24th Amendment
Abolished the poll tax in the United States that discriminated against colored people. -
Poll Taxes
Were abolished with the passingof the 24th amendment. Made people have to pay to vote. -
Civil Rights Act of 1964
Act passed in 1964 that ensured colored people their basic civil rights. Led to multiple other laws being passed. -
Voting Rights Act of 1965
Prohibited voting discrimination against colored people. Also enforced the 14th and 15th amendments. -
Literacy Tests
Were given to colored people trying to vote. Abolished with the Voting Rights Act of 1965. -
Robert Kennedy Speech
Speech given following the assasination of Martin Luther king Jr. Is regarded as one of the greatest speeches of the modern era. -
Reed v Reed
Court case stating that the administrators of estates cannot be named in a way that discriminates between sexes. -
Equal Rights Amendment
Amendment stating that equal rights shall not be abridged on account of gender/sex. -
Regents of the University of California v Bakke
Court case upholding Affirmative Action, also known as giving minorities fair treatment in hiring process -
Bowers v Hardwick
Case prohibiting anal and oral sex between consenting homosexuals. Overturned in 2003. -
Americans With Disabilities Act
Act that gave Americans with physical disabilities more freedom in regards to what thy can do (ramps, automatic doors, etc...) -
Lawrence v Texas
Makes same-sex sexual activity legal in all US states and territories. Overturns Bowers v. Hardwick. -
Fisher v Texas
Upheld affirmative action case from 1978's Regents of the University of California v Bakke -
Affirmative Action
Favoring members of a disadvantaged culture or race in the hiring of individuals. -
Indiana Gay Rights
Law regarding gay rights was denied review on this date.
