Dred Scott v. Sandford
the court case that said that blacks were not American citizens and could not sue in fed courts. they also did not have the rights to be an American -
13th Amendment
the end of slavery you could no longer own a slave. if you own a slave you will be charged with a crime. this was a big deal for the African American because they were enslaved and they finally could be "Free" -
14th Amendment
the amendment that said if you are born in the united states then you are a citizen and this even went for formally enslaved people. this was a huge deal for slaves because if they had kids then there kids would be known has united states citizens -
15th Amendment
the 15 amendment is your right to vote shall not be taken away because of your race or color. this was a very big deal for those of color because it gave people of color the right to vote which is a very basic privilege in America. -
Plessy v. Ferguson
Court ruled that racial segregation laws did not violate the U.S. Constitution as long as the facilities for each race were equal in quality this was big because it meant that the Jim crow laws were fine even though stuff wasn't "separate but equal" -
Nineteenth Amendment
the nineteenth amendment gave woman the right to vote. or saying how no one can be told they cant vote based on there gender. this was a huge deal for woman because they have not had a say in who represents there country -
Jim Crow Era
Jim crow laws were made in southern united states to enforce racial segregation on "blacks" in schools on buss and ext. lots of white only restaurants and bathrooms. for people of "color" this was terrible because stuff was supposed to be equal but it wasn't -
Brown v. Board of Education
ruled that U.S. state laws establishing racial segregation in public schools are unconstitutional this was a big deal for people of color cause no they could have a better education and not be suck in a all black school and could now learn more and go to a nicer school -
Civil Rights Act of 1964
the civil rights act prohibits discrimination based on race color religion sex or national origin it also. it also ended segregation in schools. this was big because people of color or gender cant be fired or not hired because of that -
Voting Rights Act of 1965
voting rights act prohibits racial discrimination in voting. this was a big change because a lot of people in the south still wouldn't let "black people" vote. -
Affirmative Action
positive discrimination, involves sets of policies and practices within a government or organization seeking to include particular groups based on their gender, race, sexuality this helps protect these groups and make sure that they are equal and have equal rights -
Reed v. Reed
they determined that Discrimination based on gender is not constitutional when naming the administrator of an estate. this was a big deal for woman because they keep making bigger and bigger steps to equality and being equal with men in there rights -
Equal Rights Amendment
This was the amendment that granted equal rights for men and woman this was a big deal for woman because the previously didnt have a say in government or in the job they wanted to work they were expected to just be a stay at home wife so this is a big deal for them -
