Jim Crow Laws
The term Jim Crow came around in the south around 1865. This term referred ti tge bad conditions that African Americans lived in after emancipation.These laws were passes in order ti duscrunubate and segrigate against blacks. -
Poll Taxes
Poll taxes started around the same time as Jom Crow laws in 1965 poll taxes were putting a price on a vote. That means that in order to vote you had to pay a certain amount of money. This was essentially put in palce mostly in southern states to keep Arican Americans from voting, poll taxes were outlawed with the ratification of the 24th amendment on January 23, 1964 -
13th amendment
the 13th amendment was to end the institution of slavery. the ratification came 8 months after the end of the civil wat and effectively made escaped slaves everhere free men and women. the amendment states " neither slavery no involuntary servitude exept as a punishmen for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exsist within the united states or any place subject to their jurisdiction. -
Literacy Test
Literacy Tests were designed to keep anyone exept the rich white people from voting. Literacy tests were gived to people who werent often able to pass because they were uneducated and poor. Often times even if one were to pass the administator of the test would fail you because they did not want you to vote. This kept majority of the voting population rich white people -
14th amendment
the amendment expanded citizenship to many who didnt yet have it. the amendment expanded citizenship to " all persons born or naturalied in the united states" this became a big deal for the children of emigrants who were here and were not citizens and became a principle that would play a big role in the rights of people in america. -
15th amendment
this is the amendment that gave african american men the right to vote. the amendment gave them this right on the grounds that the " rights of citizens of the united states to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the united states or by an state on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude. "thsi was a very significant event because it was a major battle won by african americans in term of the rights that they had. -
Plessy vs. Ferguson
A case that in resaut, made seperation in facilities between blacks in whites okay only if the facilities were equal. For example if whites had a school, blacks also got a school. -
19th amendment
This was the hard fought battle that finally resulted in women being allowed to vote. Back in these tiems ,many did not believe women were smart enough to vote. this is a signigicant law becasue it was a win for women everywhere in terms of the civil rights that they all have -
Korematsu vs United States
This was another case that went against the 14th ammendment due to racism. This again shows that you are not to be seperated due to your race. -

The Brown vs Board of education case was a turning point it decided that seperate schools where unconstitutional. -
Bus Boycott
The montgomry bus boycott was sparked by the arrest of Rosa Parks, and African American woman who refused to give her seat to a white person on the bus. the boycotts went on for about 13 months when segregation on public busses was found unconstitutional. This was an important event in the struggle for civil rights of African americans -

24th amendment
this amendment eliminated poll taxes. this was a significant event becuse this meant that people could go vote even if they werent weathly. the poll taxes tainted the voting system because only wealth people could vote, which discriminated against people who werent as wealthy. -

the voting rights act of 1965 was another act signed into law by lyndon Johnson. This law was what outlawed both literacy test and poll taxes. Presidnt Johnson believed that all you needed to vote to be an American citized and to be registered as a voter.
