Dred scott v. Sanford
Dred scott lived in free soil in illinois with his owners. He sued the supreme court demanding his freedom but was denied citizenship and basic rights.This didnt apply to only him but to all blacks. He had to return to being a slave. -
The 13th Ammendment
Ammendment officially and formally abolishing slavery. No slavery or involuntary service can be legally practiced within the country. All blacks had gained their freedom. -
14th Amendment
Automatically gives anyone born or "naturalized" here citizenship. This gave former slaves their citizenship in the U.S, This amendment also forbids any state to deny any person equal rights and equal protection. -
The 15th Amendment
Gave African American men the right to vote. They could not be denied because of their race, color, or "previous condition of servitude". -
Civil Rights act of 1865
THis act was created because of buisness owners and merchants who would deny to make their facilities accessible to black people. The act gaurenteed equal rights in all public facilities -
Plessy v. Ferguson
A supreme court decision racially segregating people, they have equal railroad cars just seperate from one another. One for black people and another for white people, -
NAACP
The start of a Multi- Racial group to ensure equality in politics, education, and economy standards. Their goal is to make sure everyone maintains equality and to improve living standards. -
Brown V. Board.
Another Supreme court case. Arguing that a segregated learning enviorment was unconstitutiona and that having seperate classes was not at all equal.The case ended in overturning the Plessy v. Ferguson case. -
Rose Parks
Rose Parks refused to give up her seat to a white passenger on a bus which was expected of black people at the time. She was arrested for doing so. This sparked up a hugh bus boycott in the black community. -
SCLC
The southern Christian leadership conference was established with Martin Luther King Jr. as president. THe group organized many civil right movements through only non-violent acts. -
Sit in at F.W. Woolworth
Four black students began a sit in at a F.W. woolworths lunch counter. They were allowed to sit there but were not allowed to eat. Many protestors came to harrass the four students, but after 6 months they were allowed to sit and eat food with the white people and no longer had to sit in their segregated area. -
JFK executive order
President Kennedys executive order prohibiting discrimination in federal goverment jobs. The equal employment oppurtunity committee helped to find ways to help enforce the new executive order. -
James Meridith
James Meridith was the the first black student to enroll at the University of missippi. President Kennedy had to send 5,000 troops to contain the violence and protestors surrounding the building. -
I have a Dream
More than 250,000 showed up at lincoln memorial on August 28, 1963 to hear Martin Luther King Junior give his famous "i have a dream..." speech. -
Civil rights act of 1964
Act eliminating discrimination of all kinds in public facillities, jobs, and erased the segregation in schools. This act gave the federal goverment the power to desegregate and all laws in the south pertaining to discrimination were abolished.
