bans slavery nationally -
14th amendment
all people born in america are automatically american citizens. bans discrimination based on race, age, gender, religion and disability. protections granted by the Bill of Rights now apply to the State and Local gov’ts. -
15th amendment
cannot be denied the right to vote based on race. -
Plessy V. Fergusson
Plessy boarded a whites-only compartment of a train and refused to move to the coloured-only compartment, and was arrested. -
19th amendment
right to vote cannot be denied based on gender -
Brown V. Board
argued about children being segregated in school. the coloured children would feel they are worse than the white children, preventing them from being motivated to learn. this would cause them to be less successful in life. -
Civil Rights Act of 1964
cannot discriminate based on race, religion, gender, disability, age. (applies to government and business. States will lose federal $ if they violate this law). -
Voting Rights Act of 1965
enforces the 15th amendment, prevents discrimination. -
Civil Rights Act of 1968
bans housing discrimination, illegal to have a law that said ‘white people have to live here and P.O.C. had to live there’.
