  • Truman's Executive Order

    Ends segregation in the military
  • Brown v. Board of Education

    Supreme Court declared the end of racial segregation in public schools across America.
  • The Murder of Emmett Till

    Two white men brutally murdered a 14-year-old black kid in Mississippi. This was one of the reasons why the Civil Rights Movement started.
  • Rosa Parks and the Bus Boycotts

    Rosa Parks, a black woman, was arrested for refusing to give up her seat to a white man in the front of a public bus. Black citizens led by MLK boycotted the public buses until they were allowed to sit in the front of the bus.
  • Arranging Nonviolent Protests

    MLK with 60 other black pastors and civil rights leaders met and set up nonviolent protests against racial discrimination. This occurred on two dates, January 10-11.
  • "Little Rock Nine"

    9 black students attended Central High School in Little Rock Arkansas. President Eisenhower ordered the 101st Airborne to escort them to and around the school.
  • Eisenhower's Civil Rights Act

    President Eisenhower signs the Civil Rights Act of 1957 to protect voter rights of African Americans and other minorities.
  • Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee

    The SNCC is founded which helped young black people get involved in the Civil Rights Movement.
  • Greensboro, North Carolina

    Black college students sat down at a "white's only" lunch counter. They were not served but it did lead to other people doing the same thing.
  • Freedom Riders

    Black people traveled down to the south to test out how people would react to them riding the public transportation system and to see how if the new laws were working (buses, and trains).
  • James Meredith

    James Meredith was the first black student to enroll in the University of Mississippi. President Kennedy had to send 5,000 federal troops to stop the riots and chaos the started because of this.
  • Standoff at the University of Alabama

    Governor George C. Wallace of Alabama blocked two black students from registering at the University of Alabama. This lasted until President Kenedy sent the National Guard to let them register.
  • March on Washington

    250,000 black protestors held a nonviolent protest against racism and racial segregation in the US. This took place in Washington D.C. This was when MLK gave his famous "I Have a Dream" speech.
  • Church Bombings

    A bomb was set off at the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama. Four people were killed.
  • LBJ's Civil Rights Act

    President Johnson signs the Civil Rights Act of 1964 which prevented racial employment discrimination.
  • Malcolm X

    Malcolm X was assassinated at a rally by his former religious group, the Nation of Islam.
  • Selma to Montgomery March

    600 people marched from Selma to Montgomery Alabama in protest of black voter suppression. The police attack the nonviolent protesters.
  • Voting Rights Act of 1965

    President Johnson signs the Voting Rights Act of 1965 which stopped people from taking literacy tests to be eligible to vote.
  • MLK's Assassination

    MLK was assassinated in his hotel room in Memphis, Tennessee by James Earl Ray
  • Fair Housing Act

    President Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1968 which gave minorities equal opportunity while trying to find housing.
