  • Sit-ins

    Sit-ins
    Sit-ins created by CORE often ended with people getting arrested or even beat. However, they were powerful and showed force. A sit-in was when African Americans would sit in segregated areas until they were served/helped. While they may not have always ended nicely, the thought proved to many that African American's wanted to be equal.
  • Creation of the SCLC

    Creation of the SCLC
    Martin Luther King Jr and many other African America clergymen established the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). The program promoted nonviolent protests!
  • The March on Washington

    The March on Washington
    Civil rights leaders wanted to have a march/walk in Washington DC to bring attention to JFK's bill. More than 200,000 people came to this peaceful march.
  • "I have a dream"

    "I have a dream"
    On the same day as the march in Washington DC, Martin Luther King Jr gave a very inspiring speech. He talked about equal rights for all, and not judging by the color of someones skin. Despite this speech, however, Kennedy's bill remained stalled in Congress.
  • Cloture

    Cloture
    After JFK was assassinated, Johnson was president. He wanted the civil rights bill to be passed, however, many racist Senate members stalled it. With a procedure called "cloture", the Civil Rights Act was passed. Cloture is 3/5 vote to limit debate and call for a vote.
  • The Selma March

    The Selma March
    King and many others organized a 50 mile march. Violence offcured at the beginning, but after the violent acts ended, more people ended up joining the march!!
