South Carolina declared two federal tariffs unconstitutional and said that they would not be enforced within the state. While nothing came of it, it opened the southern state's eyes to the possibility of sucession.

The Dred Scott Case
The supreme court decided in this case that no african-american could claim US citizenship or petition the court for their freedom. This obviously caused the anti-slavery movements to get mad.
