The Lucas No. 1 well blew in at Spindletop near Beaumont. -
Offshore
The first offshore drilling was was in Galveston Bay. Several dry holes followed and the fields were abandoned. But a gusher in 1916 created a real boom there. -
East Texas Field
The East Texas field was discovered by veteran C.M. (Dad) Joiner. The success of this well was followed by the biggest leasing campaign in history. -
