  • University of Georgia founded

    The legislature's approval of the charter on January 27,1785, made UGA the first university established by a state government and provided the framework for what could become the American system of publicly supported colleges and universities.
  • Yazoo Land Fraud

    Scheme by which Georgia legislators were bribed in 1795 to sell most of the land now making up the state of Mississippi.
  • Capital moved to Louisville

    When the British left, the capital was moved to Augusta, then Louisville while a new city was being built on the Oconee River.
  • Eli Whitney and the Cotton Gin

    The cotton gin took the seeds out of the fiber of the cotton and it helped a lot back then.
