  • Purchase of Alaska

    Purchase of Alaska
    William Seward bought Alaska for $7.2 million from Russia. Many people criticized his purchase of what later turned out to be a great deal.
  • Hawaii Grants use of Pearl Harbor to the U.S.A.

    The United States had been pressuring Hawaii to grant them use of the important harbor. It quickly became a great refuling station for merchant and military ships.
  • Overthrow of Queen Lliuokalani

    The rich american planters feeling that their rights were beign restricted staged a revolt with the help of US marines. They then asked the US to annex them into the country.
  • Maine Explodes

    Maine Explodes
    The USS Maine explodes mysteriously in Havana Harbor. Many americans belived it was the Spanish and soon afterwards declared war on Spain.
  • Spanish American War

    The US went to war with spain for cuban independance. 5 months later the spanish signed a truce for peace and with drew rom cuba and other islands
  • Open Door Policy

    The open door policy prevents one single country from having a monopoly on chinese trade. This benifited the US because they had no land in china and now they could trade much easier with china.
  • Boser Rebellion in China

    The resentment of foreigners was so great in the chinese people they rebelled and killed many foreigners. It took a combine military force to put down the rebellion.
  • President Mckinley Assasinated

    President Mcinley was killed on his trip to Niagra Falls with his wife. At around 4:00 PM Mckinley was greeting people at the Temple of Music. Anarchist Leon Czolgosz was hidding a gun in his hand and shot Mckinley point blank in the chest twice. Mckinley later died from an infection on the 14th. Leon Czolgosz was quickly found guilty and was put to death on October 29th.

    Opening of Panama Canal
    The panama canal was a very important short cut that connected the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. It cut weeks of travel time from the east coast to China or the west coast.
  • US Pays Columbia for Loss of Panama

    The US paid Columbia $25 million to compensate for the loss of Panama. Before this many people belived that the US cheated Columbia out of the land.
