Proclamation of 1763
The king issued a law requiring colonists to stay east of a line drawn on a map along the crest of the Appalachian Mountains. This law was called the Proclamation of 1763 -
The Sugar act
The Sugar Act of 1764 was among the first of the new taxes this law was designed to raise revenue as well as to reinforce British control over the colonists. The goal of the sugar act was to encourage merchants to pay the lower duty instead of smuggling molasses into the colonies to avoid paying the tax. -
The Currency act
The currency act, also passed in 1764, aimed to more tightly control the colonial economy. Previously, different colonists issued their own paper money. The currency act declared that only British currency could be used in the colonies. -
The Quartering act
In 1765, the British parliament passed the Quartering act. The Quartering act required colonists to provide housing for British soldiers. if a city did not have the barracks to house the soldiers, the men were housed in local inns, homes, and stables or vacant houses or barns. -
The Stamp act
Passed by the parliament in 1765, the Stamp act provoked an even greater storm of protest. Unlike previous laws, the Stamp act did nothing to further Britain's, mercantilism aims. Instead, it was designed purely to raise revenue to pay for the soldiers stationed in the colonies. -
Protest the stamp act
In 1766, the protesters succeeded. Parliament repealed, or cancelled, the stamp act. The colonists had taken their first major step toward independence from Britain and creating a new american identity. -
The Boston massacre
On March 5,1770, a boy began yelling insults at a British solider standing guard at a government building. A crowd gathered around the communication, Captain Thomas Preston led a group of seven additional soldiers out to diffuse the situation. The crowd grew larger, stuff at the soldiers. Then someone hit a solider with a club, knocking his gun out of his hands. suddenly Preston's men were firing at the crowd. Five townspeople were killed and six were hurt. -
Tea act
In 1773, the parliament passed the Tea act, allowing the British east India company to sell tea directly in the colonies. This lowered the price of tea, but it also took money away from the colonial tea merchants.The prime minister also refused to repeal the Townshend Acts' tax on Tea. -
Boston tea party
On the night of 12/16/1773 members of the sons of liberty disguised themselves as native and boarded three ships loaded with tea in the Boston harbor. W/o harming the ships' other cargo, they dumped the tea in the water. On October 14, 1774, in Annapolis, Maryland, a ship with a cargo of tea was set on fire. -
The Declaration of Independence
The colonists signed the declaration of independence from England on July 28, 1776.
