Mexico
Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla encouraged the people to overthrow the Spanish rule. They were victorious, and Hidalgo became leader. He was later executed, and so was the following leader, Jose Maria Morelos. Finally, in 1823, the army overthrew Emperor Agustin de Iturbide and Mexico was declared a Republic. -
Venezuela
Creoles led a revolution in Venezuela. As a result, Simon Bolivar emerged as the leader, and he tried to merge Colombia, Venezuela and Ecuador into one country in 1824. This attempt was a failure and the region experienced a weak government and political chaos -
U.S. and Mexico
Although Texas gained its independence from Mexico in 1836, they were not admitted into the Union until 1845. Afterwards, a war occured between the U.S. and Mexico which resulted in territories in Southwest America being established. -

The Civil War began. This lead to the end of slavery in the U.S., which was a monumental social change in the region. Within the next 25 years, slavery would be abolished in other Southern American nations sych as Brazil. The Civil War ended May 9, 1865. -

Although Slavery was abolished, changing the common view of African-Americans took a long time. Consequently, Jim Crow laws were passed to discriminate African-Americans in almost everyway possible. -
U.S. and Steel
During this decade, the U.S. became the world's largest producer of steel. This solidified their ability as an empire not only to conquer land a benefit from its resources, but also to produce a huge commodity for a world market. Companies like Bessemer and Carnegie Steel produced large amounts using a new technique called the bessemer process
