    This marked the beginning of settlement in the America’s and would eventually lead to colonization
  • 1441

    First shipment of African slaves brought directly from Africa to Portugal

    This was the start of major slave trade between Africa and America for slaves.
  • 1481

    Portuguese fort established at El Mina

    This was one of the Portugueses first forts, established at El Mina and gave them a foothold in the new world.
  • 1562

    Beginning of English slave trade

    This was the start of a trend of slave trade which would continue until the 1800s.

  • Fall of Songhai empire

    The fall of the Songhai empire resulted in violence and protest as West Africas most powerful empire was crushed.

  • Dutch establish colony at cape of good hope

    This was a key point in Dutch expansion and resulted in the Dutch gaining a foothold in Northern Africa.

  • English get right to import slaves to Spanish empire

    This resulted in greater slave trade and as a result of the slave trade the further spread of guns in Africa.

  • Abolitionist movement gains strength in England

    This established the precedent for the desire to abolish slavery.

  • Cape Colony comes under former British control

    This shows a major shift in power in Africa and Great Britain continues to grow in power.

  • Great Britain abolished slavery in the West Indies

    This set the precedent for other nations and places to abolish slavery.
